Movie Review: The Bling Ring

When I was 13, I fell in love with a director for the very first time. Her name was Sofia Coppola and she was the one who released the first film that ever made me feel truly understood: "The Virgin Suicides".

Fun fact: the second director I fell in love with was Richard Linklater (read my review on "Before Midnight" here.)

So, when I got a last-minute invitation to watch the advanced screening of "The Bling Ring" at SM Megamall last night, you can just imagine how quickly I dropped everything and just decided to go despite the distance and the last-minute-ness of it all.

It has to be said from the very beginning that if you are as huge of a fan of Sofia Coppola as I am, you won't leave the cinemas with a massive "OMG THAT WAS AWESOME" feeling after watching "The Bling Ring". I guess this is mostly because I LOVED "The Virgin Suicides", "Lost in Translation" and "Marie Antoinette" so much that my expectations were through the roof before I even got to SM Megamall to begin with.

Still, "The Bling Ring" is a fun watch. It's funny, it's real (it is based on a true story, after all) and it doesn't try hard to impress, the latter of which is just one of the things that I love about all of Sofia Coppola's movies.

If you haven't heard of "The Bling Ring" yet, well, it basically refers to this group of teenagers who used to sneak into celebrity's homes and take their stuff - not coz of spite or poverty or selfishness or anything; but just because they could more than anything else, really.

I used to be an avid fan of news stories like that and kept churning out random trivia about the real Bling Ring gang while watching the movie with Gerd (sorry if I annoyed you, baby boy!) but seriously... I thought they were pretty cool for pulling their heists off for that long.

The main cast of "The Bling Ring" pretty much consists of unknowns, aside from Emma Watson. May I just point out that this is her first movie not based on a book? Lol. A lot of people might think that she is a bit exaggerated in her acting in the movie, but Alexis Neiers actually talks and moves like that. No joke. (As I've said, I've done my research. :p)

Anyway, Katie Chang is really what made me want to keep watching, though. Despite her slow start at winning me over with her acting skills, I just found her so gorgeous, I couldn't look away.

It is definitely beautifully filmed, but there seems to be something lacking in the movie. I actually think all of the trivia that I churned out for Gerd regarding the robberies done on Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Lindsay Lohan were so much more interesting than the things that they showed in the film.

I would have loved to see all of that on-screen, or at the very least, see the characters move on with their lives and find out how they grew and what they learned after serving time for their crimes.

But I guess that's what Google is for. 3 stars out of 5.
